The Sankofa project will give African-American students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to return to the past by examining the great poets and poetry of African Americans. The study of the past is to inspire workshop participants to develop as socially concious poets, readers, and writers, who know the historical struggle of African Americans for equitable education. The project is semester long (January to May) and requires a commitment for the duration from the student and parental support. An interview and writing sample are required. The program is presented by Dr. Mary Weems and Mrs. Sylvia Stewart-Lumpkin. Register and see Noble staff for an application and to hear more about the project.
